California has long defined itself through culture.
Film, literature, craft, visual art, music, dance, design, food, fashion, architecture, the list goes on and on. It’s how we understand ourselves, and how the world understands us.
As the California Arts Council marks 50 years of creative impact, this month a new cycle of investment begins. This one centers artists directly through the Individual Artists Fellowship, opening April 15.
For the Central Coast, Arts Council Santa Cruz County has been selected as the administering organization, one of only eight partners statewide leading this work at a regional level.
What does that actually mean? It means the “how” and “who” of this fellowship are being guided by people who live and work right here. Through this partnership, the Arts Council will guide the full lifecycle of the fellowship across six counties: Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. That work includes outreach, application support, and a panel-based review process, with local partners playing a key role in promoting the opportunity, supporting artists within their immediate communities, and recruiting panelists.
The Individual Artists Fellowship provides unrestricted funding to artists and culture bearers working across all disciplines and at different stages of their careers:
- Emerging ($5,000): For those at the beginning of their public career.
- Established ($10,000): For artists with a sustained body of work.
- Legacy ($50,000): For those who have made significant, long-term contributions to the field.
The California Arts Council has spent five decades building a framework for this kind of investment, one that reflects the scale and diversity of California itself. Through regional partners, that framework becomes real. It reaches artists working in rural communities and urban centers, across disciplines, languages, and lived experiences. And it does so with intention.
For Arts Council Santa Cruz County, serving as an administering organization reflects a broader evolution and commitment to its values. This isn’t only about delivering a program; it’s about how resources move. It’s about how opportunities are communicated, who feels invited in, and who doesn’t. It’s the behind-the-scenes work of relationship and cultural bridge-building, resourcing the “invisible” work of arts administration and advocacy.
The impact of that work is visible in who applies and who receives support. You can see it in the 2025 fellows, who are an expansive reflection of the Central Coast and the artists shaping its future.
As the fellowship opens, the invitation is simple: If you have a sustained practice, a point of view, and a connection to your community, then this is for you.
How to Apply: The application portal opens on April 15th. Applicant Orientations will be offered on April 15 from 1-2:30 pm and April 23rd from 6:30 to 8 pm on Zoom. Each Central Coast partner will host office hours for their communities. Artists are encouraged to review the eligibility requirements and register for an orientation.
