The San Benito County Arts Council is thrilled to announce the return of Poetry Out Loud! Join us for a powerful evening of spoken word on Thursday, February 5th, at 6:00 PM at the Art Depot (35 5th Street, located in the historic train depot in downtown Hollister).
This national poetry recitation contest is not just a competition; it’s a celebration of great poetry, encouraging our local high school students to explore both classic and contemporary works through the art of memorization and performance. We are proud to partner with Hollister High School, Anzar High School, and the San Benito County Office of Education to bring this impactful program to our community.
A Decade of Poetry in San Benito County
As part of the national Poetry Out Loud movement—which has reached over 3.8 million students nationwide since 2005—this year marks our tenth county competition! Our program is made possible by the generous support of the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation.
Come witness the San Benito County Finals as our talented students compete for top honors. The county champion will not only receive a $500 cash prize but will also earn a spot in the California State Poetry Out Loud contest in Sacramento this March. The ultimate State champion will advance to the National Finals in Washington, D.C., where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distributed!
Prepare for the competition in our student zoom prep sessions, check in, choose your poems and practice how to best recite.
